The importance of flossing

Brushing the teeth is one of the most effective and popular form of oral hygiene. Though, the fact is that a toothbrush is unable to reach each and every nook and corner of mouth. Hence, to clean the in-between spaces of teeth, where most of food particles take refuge, 'flossing' is suggested.

What is Dental Flossing?

Flossing is a supplementary dental procedure, which co-operates brushing and helps in enhanced dental health. This particular procedure makes use of a 'dental floss' for scraping the teeth. A dental floss is a thin nylon or plastic thread which helps in scraping the teeth of all the struck food particles and miniscules that promote the growth of plaque and eventual tooth decay.

How to do Flossing?

Here is a step by step procedure to do perfect flossing.

-First of all wash your mouth thoroughly with either a mouth wash or drinking water.
-Next, cut a piece of floss measuring 18 inches.
-Now, wrap half of the floss around your middle finger.
-Wrap the remaining floss around the other hand's middle finger.
-You need to hold the floss tightly between your thumbs and forefingers.
-For flossing, just glide the floss very gently between your teeth. Make sure you don't snap or force the floss.
-The movement should be so, that, the moment the floss reaches gum line it should be curved in the shape of alphabet- 'C' around the bottom of the tooth. Scrape up and down very carefully to clean the tooth.
-Repeat the same flossing technique for all the tooth. Be sure that you use a clean piece of floss for every tooth.
-Complete the flossing session by rinsing the mouth with drinking water.

At first flossing may seem a bit difficult but with continuous practice, one can easily learn the art of flossing.
